Vehicle Overview

The 2017 Infiniti QX50 ranks 9 out of 15 Luxury Compact SUVs.

The 2017 Infiniti QX50 has a powerful V6 engine, handles more like an agile car than an SUV, and has one of the lowest base prices in the class. Many class rivals have better mpg ratings and more cargo space, however, and the QX50's design is getting a little stale, both inside and out.

The 2017 Infiniti QX50 has a powerful V6 engine, handles more like an agile car than an SUV, and has one of the lowest base prices in the class. Many class rivals have better mpg ratings and more cargo space, however, and the QX50's design is getting a little stale, both inside and out.

Is the Infiniti QX50 a Good Vehicle?

Yes, the Infiniti QX50 is a good vehicle. Like any crossover, it combines elements of both a car and an SUV. It has a powerful V6 engine, and it is one of the more fun-to-drive cars in the class. The 2017 QX50 has a nice cabin - as you'd expect from a luxury vehicle - and it has plenty of standard and available features. To top things off, the QX50 has a starting MSRP under $35,000, which is one of the lowest prices in the class.

Though there is plenty to like, the 2017 QX50 does have a few shortcomings. It has one of the smallest cargo holds in the class, and its gas mileage is well below average for the class. And though it's not, strictly speaking, a flaw, the QX50's cabin may feel outdated because it hasn't been redesigned in nearly a decade.

Should I Buy the Infiniti QX50?

Just because the QX50 is a good car that doesn't mean it's the only one worth considering. For not much more (about $1,000), you can get the Acura RDX, which gets better gas mileage and has more cargo space and roomy seats. Though it costs substantially more (about $6,000), the Audi Q5 has one of the nicest cabins in the class and an engaging powertrain. And if you like the QX50 but want something bigger, the Infiniti QX70 might be worth a look. The bottom line is that regardless of how much you like the QX50, you shouldn't limit yourself to looking at only one vehicle.

We Did the Research for You: 72 Pieces of Data Analyzed

In order to bring you the most useful and accurate information about the 2017 Infiniti QX50, we analyzed 72 pieces of data, including fuel economy estimates, crash test ratings, and other professional reviews. We put all this work into our reviews to provide you with all the information you need before you head to the dealer.

Infiniti launched the QX50 for the 2008 model year, and it has undergone only minor changes since then, including a name change (it was formerly known as the Infiniti EX). As a result, this overview uses applicable reviews and research from the 2008 through 2017 model years.

Why You Can Trust Us

How Much Does the Infiniti QX50 Cost?

The 2017 QX50 has an MSRP of $34,650 for the base model, making it one of the least expensive luxury compact SUVs. Some class rivals, like the Acura RDX, are only about $1,000 more, but others, like the Audi Q5 (MSRP of $40,900), are significantly more expensive. The QX50's base model has rear-wheel drive, but you can get an all-wheel-drive model for $1,800 more. There are several available packages, ranging from the $900 Premium package to the $2,750 Technology package, that add features like an 11-speaker Bose audio system, touch-screen navigation, and power-folding rear seats. There are also plenty of available driver assistance features, such as front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.

To add a specific features package, you may have to add other packages, as well. If you want the Technology package, for example, you have to get the Premium package, too. A fully loaded QX50 carries a price tag in the high-$40,000s, which is less than the cost of many fully loaded rivals.

Infiniti QX50 Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: Infiniti QX50 or Acura RDX?

The Acura RDX has a comfortable and spacious interior. The seats are supportive, and there are plenty of standard and available tech features, including many active safety options. The RDX has one of the best cargo capacities in the class and provides much more space than the QX50, regardless of whether the rear seats are up or down. The RDX comes with a V6 engine that provides ample power and gets better gas mileage than the QX50. The QX50 is rear-wheel drive, whereas the RDX's base model is front-wheel drive, though it is available with all-wheel drive. The RDX is fairly agile, and the ride is smooth. The RDX isn't as athletic as the QX50, but it has a nicer interior and a higher safety rating than the Infiniti crossover, so many buyers - especially those looking for a family vehicle - will probably prefer the RDX.

Which Is Better: Infiniti QX50 or Audi Q5?

The Q5 is Audi's luxury compact SUV. Though it has a starting price roughly $6,000 more than the QX50's, it provides a lot of bang for your buck. Unlike the QX50, the Q5 provides a choice a three powertrains: the base engine (a four-cylinder with mpg ratings that best the QX50's), a supercharged V6 with plenty of power, and the 354-horsepower supercharged V6 found in the performance-oriented SQ5, which is the clear model of choice for drivers looking for a thrill. Inside, you'll find one of the nicest interiors in the class. The Q5 uses plenty of quality materials, and the seats are incredibly roomy. The rear seats also slide and recline, which is rare in this class. The Q5 has more cargo space than the QX50, and it performs well in crash tests. If you can afford the extra cost, the Q5 will probably leave you happier than the QX50.
